Teens working as user-as-designers with sex, drugs, and alcohol

Find Out! is an Entertainment-Education television series designed by and for teenagers (ages 13-19) about sex, drugs and alcohol. In Find Out!, teenagers with different cultural backgrounds became TV program makers and explored their world of sex, drugs and alcohol. The project was initiated and coordinated by the Center for Media & Health (CMH) and supported by a professional film team from Bosch Film Productions.

Find out!

Find Out! is an Entertainment-Education television series designed by and for teenagers (ages 13-19) about sex, drugs and alcohol. In Find Out!, teenagers with different cultural backgrounds became TV program makers and explored their world of sex, drugs and alcohol. The project was initiated and coordinated by the Center for Media & Health (CMH) and supported by a professional film team from Bosch Film Productions. 

Find out! consisted of 13 episodes (15 minutes each) and was broadcast every Tuesday and Thursday at 17:00, with reruns at 22:00, between January 10th and March 30th, 2006 on The Box, a Dutch MTV-like commercial music channel. A website, school tour and DVD were also part of the project.

The Find Out! project was based on the Users as Designers (UaD) approach. The teenagers co-created the program which allowed their voices to be heard. Researchers from the University of Maastricht carried out a study on the effects of the Find Out! project on teenagers. A process evaluation was also conducted by CMH to get more insight into the do’s and don’ts of the UaD approach. The results showed that young audiences were inspired by the series and recognized themselves in the portrayed situations. The DVD of the series is presently used in secondary schools and youth clubs.
